IFB Appliances is one of the most popular companies in line for washing machines. Their washing machines are best known for high speed and cradle wash technology. Today, washing machines have become an essential part of an Indian household. As improbable as it may seem, solutions pertaining to appliances are well within the reach of consumers and most often, don’t require a technician’s aid. The error code list that is typically handed in the manual booklet can be referred to for dealing with common problems. If the manual is not available to you, here is a complete list of the IFB Washing Machine Error Codes along with their appropriate solutions.

IFB Washing Machine Error Codes List: Know What They Indicate And Their Solutions

IFB Appliances is one of the most popular companies for washing machines. Here is the IFB Washing Machine error codes list for your reference.

A washing machine not draining is one of the most common problems we encounter. It can be caused by one of the following:

– The drain hose or pump is clogged with a small item of clothing, residual gunk or other debris.

– The washer is malfunctioning and not engaging the drain/spin cycle properly. It may present with an error code – check with your product manual or give the manufacturer a call to clarify what this refers to.- The drain pump is broken (the washer will generally make an unpleasant sound and/or start leaking if this is the case).

Resetting your washing machine

First, you should perform a general reset of the machine. Turn the machine off at the powerpoint, wait for one minute, and then turn it back on.

If you see no change, you can try a Master Reset. This will reset all of the onboard componentry and is often successfully used by appliance technicians. Open and close the door of the washing machine 6 times within 12 seconds. Then, run the rinse/spin cycle without clothing to see if your problems are resolved. If it drains, problem solved! If not, let’s move onto the unclogging!

Unclogging the drain hose

Turn the machine off at the powerpoint. You should always do this before moving the machine or making any adjustments.

Check that the drain hose is not kinked or bent. This can affect the washer’s draining and may be causing the error. Now, remove the drain hose from the back of the machine. This is usually attached with a couple of simple screws. You may need a hand to pull the washer from its spot to access the hose entry point.

Run some water through the hose to force the clog out. An outdoor hose connection works well. You can also use a plumbing snake, stick or long object to push the clog or item out.

If you aren’t able to easily remove the drain hose, run the hottest cycle on your machine without clothing, as this may loosen up the blockage and push it through.

Once water is steadily running through the washer drain hose, re-attach it to your machine. To ensure your machine drains efficiently, make sure that the end of the hose is not more than 12cm into the drain hole, and that it’s not kinked or bent.

If none of the above fixes your washer, your best bet is to contact the manufacturer about a service call.

This is a problem most commonly found in front loaders, as top loaders don’t need to lock their doors to keep water inside.

Front loaders need to stay tightly sealed during operation. It’s not until the end of the wash cycle that the machine will unlock automatically. However, sometimes a front loader will malfunction and remain locked, trapping clothes and water in the machine.

There are a few possible reasons for this:

– The locking mechanism could have jammed (maybe some clothes have gotten in the way).

– There could be a glitch in the washer’s computer.

– The washing machine may not be draining properly, leaving the washer door locked and the drum filled with water.

Solutions

Restart it: If you think it might be a digital problem, try the old reset trick.

Turn the washing machine off at the powerpoint for at least 60 seconds, and then turn it back on. With a little luck, the master reset should restart the wash programs.

Run a short cycle: If you think the problem is your clothes physically jamming the lock, you can set the washer to run another short cycle. This should get the clothes moving and hopefully unjam the lock. Sure, your clothes will get washed twice, but it saves calling out a technician for a simple solution!

Check the drainage hose: If the machine isn’t draining, it may be time to inspect the drainage hose for clogs. A kinked drain hose can also affect wash cycles.

The washing machine smells!

Washing machines get dirty and mouldy over time. That same tell-tale smell is then transferred onto our clothes, and we end up having to waste money washing them again.

A basic washing machine clean involves running a cycle while the machine is empty, allowing water and cleaning solution to run through the nooks and crannies. Many modern machines also feature a dedicated Drum Clean cycle, or you can use a Hot Cycle as an alternative.

Solutions

How to clean your washing machine

This method will clean both front-loader and top-loader washing machines.

You’ll need:

– 2 cups vinegar

– 1/4 cup bicarb (baking) soda

– 1/4 cup water

First, ensure that any residual scum or mould around the washer opening is scrubbed away.

Mix the water and baking soda together in a small container. Add this to the detergent compartment of your washing machine.

Pour the vinegar directly into the washing machine drum.

Choose the hottest setting available on your washer and start the cycle. The combination of vinegar and baking soda will break down any mould and mineral build-up and have your washer smelling fresher.

TIP: To keep your machine in optimum condition, run this clean every 1-2 months.

The washing machine keeps tripping the power!

Unfortunately, this is a problem with a lot of different potential causes.

Perhaps there’s a fault somewhere in the motor. Perhaps there’s a leak, and the water is getting where the power should be. Perhaps the motor overheats when the machine gets overloaded (this is probably what was happening to mine, which is why I replaced it with a front loader).

Of course, you can also avoid the problem by just not overloading the machine. But if your family has too much laundry for the machine to manage, it may be worth thinking about an upgrade to something a bit bigger.

If the problem persists, it’s best to call the manufacturer to discuss

Contact the manufacturer: If all else fails, contact the manufacturer – they can provide you with advice, and if your machine is under warranty, arrange for a professional repairer to drop by for a visit.

Note that while there are solutions online that involve taking the machine apart, attempting this can void the warranty or limit your ability to have the machine repaired by a service technician in future.

My phone is trapped inside the washer / I left my favourite shirt out of the wash!

It may seem blatantly obvious, but we’ve all done it – we’ve all forgotten to clean something important, or left something important (like a mobile phone) in our pocket when doing the laundry.

If you’ve got a top loader, this is an easy one to solve. Just open the lid and add/remove the item in question. No mess, no fuss.

In a front loader, things get a bit more complicated. Front load washers lock their doors during cycles to prevent water from spilling all over your laundry floor.

Solutions

Unless you’ve purchased a washing machine in the last couple of years, you won’t be able to open your front loader once the wash cycle has started.

Manufacturers now make front-loading models that can be paused before the main wash cycle so that clothes can be added.

The washing machine keeps jumping around!

Ever put on a load of washing and come back later to find the machine has somehow danced across your laundry?

Well… there’s a good chance your washer is off-balance.

When a washing machine spins, high-speed centrifugal forces are working to remove water from your clothing. If one leg of your washer is shorter than the other, this will cause the machine to move about.

It’s loud, it’s dangerous, and it’s probably damaging the machine every time it happens.

How do you solve this problem?

Check that the machine is level. Make sure that all the feet are positioned on a flat surface. You can use a spirit level to check this and adjust the legs as needed.

NB: If the washer is new, transit bolts may still be fitted to the back of the machine. Check the back of the washer for 2-3 large fixed bolts. These must be removed for the machine to operate properly.

Simply rearranging your clothes inside the washer can make a difference. Pause the cycle if possible and spread the clothes through the drum, evenly distributing the weighty items like towels and heavy garments so there isn’t one heavy clump being spun around and around.

If the problem persists, you might also consider purchasing a new machine.

Many new washers incorporate load-balancing technology, which detects and compensates off-balanced loads, helping to protect the machine and your clothes from damage.

I used the wrong washing detergent! Should I panic?

That depends. Did you use Front Loader detergent in a top loader, or Top Loader detergent in the front loader?

Front loader detergent in a top loader may mean your clothes don’t necessarily get the best clean, but nothing disastrous should take place.

As for the other case, top loader detergent is engineered to foam, as there’s usually plenty of room in a top-loader drum for the suds to expand and soak through the laundry.

If you’ve used top loader detergent in your front loader, stop the cycle if possible, and set the appliance to drain. The door won’t open until the drum is empty of water. If for any reason it’s not possible to stop and drain the machine, see if you can switch over to a shorter cycle to minimise soap build-up.

NB: High-Efficiency (HE) top loaders are designed to work with low-foaming detergents, so be careful which detergents you use here.

Know when to throw in the towel!

Unfortunately, sometimes our beloved appliances can’t be brought back to life.

It’s probably time to replace your 14-year-old washing machine with a shiny new one. Lots of new features to make your life   easier and have your clothes smelling super fresh.

With our great range of the best brands, you’ll find the perfect washer for your needs. Or, if you need help, our Laundry Buying Guide will lead you to the right option. When to Replace Your Washing Machine

Are you handy or are your just going to make things worse?

ISTOCKPHOTO/THINKSTOCK

If repair estimates have you considering a new washing machine, you may also want to consider today’s cost for that shiny appliance. After all, prices have probably gone up since you bought your current washer. When weighing whether to toss or keep your old machine, you’ll want to do a side-by-side comparison, factoring in how long the old and new machines will last, as well as the costs to operate — like electricity, water and detergent — over their anticipated lifetimes.

While they usually have a higher price tag than standard models, some washing machines are designed to use less water and energy. Appliances that bear the Energy Star seal, for example, use 10 to 50 percent less energy and water than conventional models [source: Owens]. (Energy Star is a collaborative program of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy that endorses energy-efficient appliances.) Front-loading washing machines have become more popular household choices because they use less water and detergent than top-loading washers. Keep in mind that front-loading machines can cost two to three times as much as traditional consumer washers so take your loads per week into account. If you’re a frequent washer, the savings might add up quickly. Tax credits and rebates for purchasing energy-efficient appliances can offset the sales price, too.

The average life expectancy of a new washing machine is 11 years. Consumer Reports recommends replacing any appliance that’s more than eight years old, unless it’s a high-end model and has a particular appeal to you. Others suggest replacing any top-loading washer manufactured in 1999 or earlier. Even replacing a washing machine you purchased up to the year 2005 can reduce water consumption [source: Dunn]. If an appliance is still relatively new yet no longer covered under warranty and has broken down a lot, you may be better off getting rid of it.

If you’re concerned about the impact your decision has on the environment, you have even more to consider than monetary costs and convenience. Let’s say you’re of the opinion that it’s greener to fix an appliance at any cost than to junk it. You may not be able to find replacement parts for a washer that’s more than 10 years old. And remember that older appliances use more water and electricity than those manufactured after 2005. On the other hand, it may take years for the new washing machine to pay for itself in saved energy consumption. And one final note: old washers don’t usually end up in landfills these days. Their steel is recycled

Day in and day out, we mindlessly depend on our washing machines to handle the tasks they were designed to do. Usually, this workhorse appliance tackles the job of cleaning our laundry, from filthy jeans with ground-in grass and mud stains to wet towels and more delicate garments, in steadily reliable style. Dirty laundry goes in, clean clothes come out — almost like magic!

But magic gets dark sometimes. What if your washing machine suddenly starts leaving stains on your clothing that weren’t there before? If it’s an oily or greasy stain, the problem could be an issue with your particular model. Check the website for your washing machine’s brand to see if a history of problems exists, then follow the instructions to resolve the situation or contact the manufacturer for more information.

No model defect to blame? Here are some issues that may be causing your clean clothes to come out dirty:

The Drum Is Dirty

It could be that the washing machine drum has collected greasy residue from previous loads. Try cleaning the drum by running an empty cycle with a cupful of white vinegar or bleach instead of detergent, or look for products specially designed for this purpose. Then, wipe out the drum and around the door seal with a clean, dry cloth, and use a cotton swab to clean around the drainage holes.

The Gasket Is Old and Possibly Moldy

Is your clothing coming out with black streaks on it? This could indicate a problem with the gasket on your washer, especially if your machine is a front-load washer. Mold often grows when water doesn’t dry around a faulty seal and it will leave a stain when clothing touches it. Try cleaning it with white vinegar, but if that doesn’t fix the problem, you may need to have the entire gasket replaced.

The Drive Belt Is Damaged

Another issue might be a damaged drive belt, though not all washers have drive belts. If yours has one, it is what rotates the drum during washing to distribute detergent, bleach and fabric softener. If the drive belt is damaged, the drum won’t rotate properly, causing detergent and other washing agents to drop in one spot and cause staining. You will need to have the drive belt replaced.

The Ball Bearings Need Replacing

The drum in your washer rotates freely and easily because of the bearings and if they are old and beginning to wear down, you could see black marks or rust appearing on clothing. If you begin to hear a metallic screeching sound accompanying these marks, it is probably your bearings and you will need to call someone to replace them.

The Enamel Is Chipped and Rusting

If the stains are reddish, it might be rust that has formed due to chipped enamel on the drum or in the dispenser. Many washer manufacturers offer drum replacement options. If you like fixing things yourself, try sanding and then painting the chipped spots with a rust-resistant paint.

Your Fabric Softener Is Distributing Improperly

Another source of mysterious stains could be fabric softener clinging to greasy spots. To solve this problem, reduce the amount of fabric softener that you use or try not to pack too many clothes in each load. The fabric softener needs to disburse evenly over clothing to work properly, so experiment to find the correct load size and amount of additive that result in the desired amount of softness without any spots. If you’re tried all of these solutions, and your laundry is still coming out of the wash with inexplicable spots, your dryer could be the culprit. In that case, try the same model troubleshooting tips you performed for your washer, clean out the inside drum and door seal, then call an appliance repairman.

The biggest pro of stacked units is their compact size. They’re about the same price as middle-of-the-road top-loaders and cost considerably less than front- loaders. They’re ideal for apartment or condo living, or if you’re short on space for a dedicated laundry area. They’re generally quieter than side-by-side models and use electricity rather than gas, which means you don’t need to vent your dryer. Keep in mind, though, that electric  dryers will cost you more to run than gas. They do, however, require a 240-volt outlet (regular outlets produce 120 volts), so this probably means hiring an electrician to install one. The load-sizes in these all-in-one stackable units tend to be a little smaller, though you can find units that compare to a standard top-loader. Another consideration is your height. If you happen to be vertically challenged, you may not be too hip on using a stepping stool to empty your dryer. If you’ve got some space to work with in your laundry area, but you’re really not sure how you want your new units arranged, front-loaders offer the best of both worlds because certain models are designed to be stacked. Bottom line, you get your XL high-efficiency machine in a compact setup.

They Don’t Make ‘Em Like They Used To

You may or may not have heard the term “planned obsolence,” but you’ve probably experienced it. It’s when something stops working that you think should have lasted a lot longer. Manufacturers intend for this to happen. It sounds like a plan to sell more products — and it is. But believe it or not, it can also be beneficial to consumers. Advances in technology continue to make machines better and more efficient, so replacing your broken dinosaur with a new version may actually benefit your household.

“Washer Dryer Combos: Reviews.” Consumersearch.com, 2010.  Laundry may be your least favorite chore, or you could be one of those people that think doing laundry is fun and productive. Regardless of your feelings toward it, however, for most people doing your own laundry is a necessity. The average family does about 400 loads of laundry a year [source: Energy Star].

Luckily, there are many different options, from steam cleaning to different spin cycles, so you’re sure to find a washer and dryer that fit your individual needs. If one of your top priorities is space, then one of the most compact units for cleaning clothes is a washer dryer combo, or an all-in-one washer-dryer combination.”They’re not really brand new to the market, but they have become more popular as people move into smaller apartments or condos,” says Michael Lee, vice president of marketing at Thor Appliance Company.Already popular in Europe and Asia for their space-conscious dimensions, all-in-one washer-dryer combinations are units to consider for loft dwellers, apartment residents or just those that are concerned about space [source: Creative Laundry Systems, Inc.]. These units are also popular with those having larger boats or recreational vehicles like mobile homes. Many of these units are around the size of an average dishwasher [source: Lee].Besides just being small, some all-in-one washer-dryer units are constructed a little differently than their stand-alone counterparts. We’ll look into how these units work next. Then we’ll look at the advantages and disadvantages for choosing these versions instead of a separate washer and dryer, including how you might be able to save some energy.

Let’s start by taking a closer look at the inner workings of a washer dryer combo system. There are two types of all-in-one washer-dryer combos — vented and ventless. “We have a vented version that we sell mostly to our marine and RV markets, but our ventless version is the one that is most common for use in high-rise apartments and condos, that type of thing,” says Lee.

A vented unit basically works like a regular front-loading washer and a regular dryer. The wash cycle includes tumbling the clothes with water and soap until they’re clean, then spinning them to help remove some of the excess water [source: LG Electronics]. For this drying system, the unit takes in air from the surrounding room and heats it up [American Gas Association]. This heated air is then spun with the clothes. The air picks up moisture, producing steam, which leaves the house via the vent. The system then takes in new air from the surrounding room and heats it up again to restart the process.

Alternatively, a ventless unit is a unit that doesn’t require an outside exhaust. “There really isn’t any washing difference; the main difference is on the dry side,” says Lee. “The machines use a condensing drying system, and it works like a dehumidifier.”

In a ventless system, wet clothes start in the drum. A condensing chamber, which can be plastic or metal, is cooled. Then the air inside the dryer drum is heated. As the drum spins, the interior heated air takes up moisture from the wet clothes. This moisture-laden air is then circulated through the cooled condensing chamber, which produces condensation, or a change of the moisture in the air into its liquid form of water [source: Lee]. The condensation then leaves the unit by the water drainage tube. The dry, hot air is then recirculated with the clothes, and the process repeats itself [source: Creative Laundry Systems, Inc.].

Whether you choose a vented or ventless unit, all-in-one combination units offer a range of program options to best fit your fabric care needs. You can wash and dry your clothes in one process, or you can also set the units for a “dry only” or “wash only” cycle [source: Equator Advanced Appliances]. Units offer a range of settings, including delicates, timed drying and extra rinse [source: Creative Laundry Systems, Inc., Equator Advanced Appliances, Summit Appliance].

So how efficient are washer dryer combos?

After finally deciding to tackle that mountain of laundry once and for all, spending precious time separating your colors from your whites, and proudly loading your washing machine, you find yourself hit with one of life’s inconveniences: your washing machine won’t drain.

Along with stubbing your toe and getting stuck in traffic, a washing machine not draining is one of those seemingly minor things that can ruin an otherwise good day. After all, it’s frustrating when you go to transfer a load of clothes from the washer to the dryer, only to encounter a deluge of water remaining in the washer tub after the cycle has finished.

If your washing machine won’t drain, we’re here to help. Learn more about the function of your washing machine drain and how to drain the washer on your own.

Why Won’t My Washing Machine Drain Water?

A washing machine not draining can have multiple causes, including a clogged or jammed drain hose or a broken pump, lid switch, or belt. No matter the culprit, you need to drain the water from the washing machine before diagnosing the issue or doing any work to remedy the situation.

What Does the Drain Function on a Washing Machine Do?

A washing machine’s drain function removes water from the tub during the spin cycle. The washer pump forces water from the bottom of the appliance into the drain hose. The washer drain hose loops to the top of the machine and then down to the drain, enabling the tub to fill. When the water reaches the bend in the hose, it goes out of the drain.

How to Drain a Washing Machine Manually

If your washing machine is not draining completely, the mechanics of draining the water is up to you. Here are a few ways to manually drain the water in your washing machine:

Bail it out with a bucket: Bailing out the water with a bucket, cup, or bowl is often the go-to strategy for most people who find that their washing machine won’t drain. However, this technique can be time-consuming, tedious, and hard on your back because you have to bend over repeatedly to scoop up water from the bottom of the machine.

Drain it with a hose: This is an easier way to drain water than bailing it out with a bucket because you’re using the drain hose and letting gravity do the hard work for you. To drain your washer with the washing machine drain hose, you’ll need a bucket, a screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, and a clamp. It’s also a good idea to have a sponge and towels on hand in case of a spill.

Follow these steps to drain the water with the drain hose.

Step 1: Turn off the power.

Make sure that you unplug your washer from the outlet or turn off the power at the circuit breaker or fuse box. You may also want to turn off the hot and cold water connections to the washing machine, just in case.

Step 2: Find the drain hose at the back of the washing machine.

The drain hose resides behind your washer and connects the washing machine to your exterior washing machine drainpipe. If your drain hose is bent or has a kink, it may block the water flow. If this seems to be the issue, simply straighten the hose.

If it does not appear to have a bend or kink, your next step is to disconnect it from the washing machine drain. If necessary, unscrew the hose with a clamp attached. Always keep the hose higher than the washer tub until you’re ready to empty out the water.

Step 3: Set up the bucket and drain hose.

Ensure that the bucket is in a place where you won’t accidentally knock it over; you may want to place it firmly on or between several towels. Then, drop the house lower than the washer tub and into the bucket. If the bucket fills up, simply raise the hose back above the washer tub until you can empty the bucket. Drop the hose to start to fill it again.

If water doesn’t flow freely from the washing machine tub through the drain hose and into the bucket, the filter may be blocked, so you’ll need to clear it before continuing.

Step 4: Check for and remove all clogs in the drain hose.

Once the water has fully drained out of the tub, check the drain hose for any debris, clothing, or soap blockages, all of which can make the washing machine drain clogged. To check for clogs, loosen the clamp connecting the hose to the bottom of the tub, then inspect the inside. If you see something blocking the hose or its connecting parts, remove it with the pliers, then reconnect the hose.

Step 5: Check for deeper clogs in the drain or beyond.

If your investigation shows that the drain hose is clear, that means that there may be a clog in the drain or beyond. You will likely need to use a plumber’s snake or call a professional to clear deeper clogs.

Step 6: Inspect the washing machine drain pump.

The next step is to check the washer pump to see if it has a clog, a broken belt or impeller (if you have a top-load machine), or a leak. Read through the washing machine manufacturer instructions, which should include a diagram of your unit’s drain pump location and components.

Usually, if the drain pump isn’t working properly, you’ll hear an unusual noise or notice leaking from the washing machine when it is running. If your pump is malfunctioning, you’ll need to replace it yourself or call a professional to replace it for you. If you do replace it yourself, make sure to purchase the same pump model so that it properly fits your washing machine.

Step 7: Inspect the washing machine lid switch.

Try depressing the lid switch by hand to see if it is working. If you don’t hear a click, that may indicate you have a broken switch that needs replacing.

Step 8: Inspect the washing machine belts.

If you have completed every step and still find that your washing machine won’t drain, check if damaged belts are the cause of your drain problem. The manufacturer’s washing machine instruction manual should indicate the location of the belts. To check your belts, unscrew your washing machine’s access panel and check the main belt and the pump belt. Be on the lookout for any corroded, broken, or otherwise damaged parts.

Step 9: Inspect the drain vent.

A washing machine drain vent allows air into the machine. It can help prevent the creation of a vacuum that might prevent water from draining properly from the washer. If there is a gap around the drain hose where it enters the drain, you may not need a vent. You should have a vent if local building codes require one or for proper draining if your washer is more than four feet from the vent stack.

Step 10: Use your home warranty coverage.
